Walls of Granite

The E.L. Smith Quarry (aka Rock of Ages) is the largest operating deep-hole, dimension granite quarry in the world.  Located in Graniteville, Vermont, the quarry has been in continuous operation for well over 100 years. As a leading supplier for commercial and industrial application, one can see the firm’s classic blue-gray stone (called Barre Granite, rhymes with Mary) all over the US. Barre Granite is well-suited to carving, hence its popularity for statuary and memorials. Rock of Ages sells its memorial stone through a network of dealerships throughout the country.

But what makes neighboring Barre Vermont truly unique is the local stone carvers who shape raw granite into amazing products, specifically headstones. A leisurely drive through the Hope Cemetary showcases their work, transforming a rough slab into a timeless representation of a life. Intricate details, sometimes awe-inspiring proportions, and unique designs are on display and span many generations. (Andy)
