It just feels different
After a few cross country trips, there’s a certain familiarity that sets in. Land, tie down, make a reservation, eat, sleep, leave. Sure there are minor variations between the chain hotels, but the smell of waffles and imitation maple syrup is pretty consistent.
That’s why the Driftwood Inn was so special. Found by reading a good restaurant review that mentioned an attached motel, we cadged a ride from the Mackinac County FBO operator Paul and arrived, tired and hungry, to a wonderful overnight stay.
Greeted with genuine warmth by a friendly young woman (training under the watchful eye of the owner), we were handed ‘real’ keys and made our way to an immaculately clean room to rest for a bit before strolling into the Driftwood to eat.
A real sense of welcome. Nicely spaced tables, a view over the comfortable large dining room, a wrap around bar where groups of strangers chatted easily to each other. Taste of authenticity with warm cheese curds and a pastie as big as two fists. Emily the server was no-nonsense but oh so real.
Leaving content, and reaffirming our love for the sense of home found far from home. (Jen)
