Posted by Depending on conditions, the airplane gets the equivalent of about 13 miles per gallon. On long trips, the price of fuel is an important factor in selecting stops. In October 2023, prices ranged from $4.50 – $9.50/gallon, so a 40 gallon purchase could mean a swing of $200. As we set off for home from Savannah, Georgia, with our primary adventures behind us, cheap fuel was top of the list.
Meridian, Mississippi looked like a good stop; fuel under $5.00 and hotels nearby. What more could one want? Familiar readers know what’s coming; we were absolutely blown away by this friendly, charming city (as detailed in a separate post.) But first impressions count and this was a 10.
After shutting down in front of Meridian Aviation, we were quickly greeted by the line guy.
“What do you need?” he asked. “A top off,” I replied. “Do you need an overnight crew car? I’ll pull it around so you can unload.” “Thanks, that would be fantastic.” Up drives a nearly new Ford Explorer. “You can fill out the paperwork inside,” he offered.
With the plane fueled, we drove over to the terminal and walked into a classy, modern facility where we were greeted by Miss Jennifer. “Do you need a hotel? We have discounts at several, I’ll call and get some quotes.” Minutes later, we were booked at the finest downtown hotel at a great price. I filled out the form for the car (no charge) and she asked, “do you want to visit our new museum? We have a free pass.” “Thanks, we’d love to,” I replied. “Do you know where you want to have dinner? We have a coupon you can use at Weidmann’s.” “Thanks, that’s great.” “Take a couple of waters and have a great stay…”
Probably the best welcome we have ever received. Go Meridian!
