ATC: Timing is everything

There are certain “high workload” points during any flight. Typically takeoff is one such phase of flight when the pilot must focus on several things at one time – when to “rotate” the plane off the runway, when to raise the flaps, what heading to fly once airborne…etc. We ask passengers to defer non-essential conversation during this time to allow for full focus.

What fun it was departing from Sioux City, wheels leaving the ground at a peak workload moment, and hearing the tower say “N282EE, change transponder code to 6439 and contact departure…” “Standby” said pilot while co-pilot capably dialed in the new code. Steady bank to departure heading, “Hello departure, N282EE off Sioux City…”
