Eating out of a Tin Can?

The Coronet Made a Convert out of me!

Sometimes you can just tell you’re in for something special at a restaurant. Located in Tucson’s charming Barrio Viejo, Coronet graciously welcomes guests with its understated, classy entrance. Once through the door and passing the glorious intricately carved wood bar with its glistening bottles, you know you’re ordering a cocktail straight off. Yet the most unusual menu offering had to be the local baguette, butter, and an array of delicious seafood served in aluminum “tins.” Paired with the preserved lemon olives, this quickly joined the ranks as one of my favorite new appetizers. We sampled the smoked trout fillets in olive oil – other choices involved Patagonia smoked mussels, or mackerel in mustard with crème fraiche.

Now (of course) I see tinned fish absolutely everywhere, and am transported back to our travels to San Sebastian… pintxos of remarkable complexity and flavor live on in memory, and I’m inspired to create again. There’s a world of glorious tastes out there, hiding beneath a tin wrapper. (Jen)
